SEVENTH FRAMEWORK PROGRAMME

WP 06 - Dissemination

1. Objectives

  1. To transfer skills between diabetologists and imaging experts and to enhance the exchange of expertise within and outside of the consortium
  2. To build up expertise in beta-cell imaging in Europe
  3. To inform the diabetes and imaging research community but also the general public about the goals and achievements of the project

2. Description

Beta-cell imaging is one of the most challenging fields in modern molecular imaging. So far, beta-cell imaging is largely dominated by scientists from the US. This is a result of the intensive efforts of the American National Institutes of Health to support beta-cell imaging by funding and exchange of expertise. The goal of this WP is to enhance expertise, to build up the basis for the long-term development of European top level research in the field by training as well as dissemination of expertise in- and outside of the consortium, and to enhance collaborative research efforts by expansion of the number of potentially involved centres. All members of the consortium will therefore contribute to this WP with their expertise either in the field of diabetology and beta-cell (patho)physiology or in molecular imaging. Furthermore, achievements of the project will be disseminated to the general public, patient organizations, general practitioners, etc (see below).

All new knowledge and information on the key technology as well as imaging protocols, labelling protocols etc. for imaging of beta-cell mass, loss, and neogenesis in diabetes gathered through the scientific research work in BetaImage will be largely disseminated to target groups consisting of all parties involved in diabetology and molecular imaging, namely scientists, physicians, nurses, hospitals, medical authorities and the industrial companies of the sector. This diffusion will be done through articles in professional scientific journals; book chapters; articles in the lay press and presentations in public media; communications at national and international scientific meetings; biotechnology publications and presentations in the framework of biotechnology exhibitions. A focus of dissemination of knowledge and expertise of BetaImage will be dissemination via workshops within and outside of the project to increase the number of scientist capable of utilizing beta-cell imaging strategies and techniques. At the end of the runtime, an international workshop will be held with international experts and participants to make the results of BetaImage as well as the state-of-the-art of beta-cell imaging known to an international scientific community in a condensed form. Furthermore, free information will be provided to the scientific community on all genes expressed in human and rodent islet cells, under both physiological and pathological conditions, via the Beta-cell Gene Expression Bank.
